Blackmonth: A Modern Blackletter Typeface for Web Design

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handmade leather goods. The brand had a strong, artisanal feel, and I needed a typeface that could reflect both tradition and modernity. That’s when I stumbled upon Blackmonth, a modern blackletter typeface with a unique blend of gothic letterforms and elegant swashes.

Blackmonth immediately stood out because it felt like the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. It wasn’t too ornate to feel outdated, nor was it too simple to lose its character. I decided to test it in the hero section of the homepage, where the main headline would sit over a dark background image of leather textures.

The first thing I noticed was how well the swashes in Blackmonth complemented the rich, textured visuals. They added movement without overwhelming the design. The font had enough weight to be legible against the dark backdrop, which is something I often worry about with decorative typefaces.

I experimented with different sizes and line heights to see how it performed across devices. On mobile screens, I found that keeping the text size around 28px with a generous line height of 1.4 helped maintain readability. Even though it’s a display font, I didn’t have to sacrifice clarity for style.

Next, I considered where else Blackmonth could work on the site. It felt natural as a header for product categories, especially those with names that had a more artistic or vintage flair. For example, a section titled “Handcrafted Wallets” looked striking in Blackmonth, reinforcing the brand’s identity as a purveyor of quality, timeless products.

I also thought about using it in call-to-action areas. A button labeled “Shop Now” in a simpler sans serif font worked best, but Blackmonth made a great choice for a secondary CTA like “Explore Our Collection.” It added visual interest without confusing users.

One thing I always keep in mind when choosing a typeface is how it pairs with other fonts. For body copy, I paired Blackmonth with a clean, modern sans serif like Montserrat. This combination gave the site a professional yet creative vibe. The contrast helped guide the user’s eye from the bold headlines down to the more readable body text.

Another consideration was the file formats and webfont availability. I checked the font package and was happy to find that it included full webfont support, which meant I could easily integrate it into the site without performance issues. It also came with multiple weights and alternates, giving me flexibility in different sections of the design.

I tested Blackmonth on a few different backgrounds, including light and dark modes. It handled both well, which is essential for a site that might need to accommodate various user preferences. When placed over an image, I used a subtle overlay to ensure the text remained legible and didn’t clash with the background.

For branding elements like logos or social media graphics, I found that Blackmonth added a touch of sophistication. It worked particularly well for promotional banners and campaign pages, where a bit of elegance can elevate the overall aesthetic.

Of course, I also kept an eye on how the font affected user engagement. I monitored how visitors interacted with the page after implementing Blackmonth and saw no drop in readability or click-through rates. In fact, some users commented on the visual appeal of the typography, which is a nice bonus.

If you’re working on a project that needs a typeface with personality, Blackmonth is worth considering. Whether it’s for a creative portfolio, coaching website, or digital brand kit, it offers a stylish way to communicate your message while maintaining a polished look.

When choosing a font, it’s important to think about not just how it looks, but how it functions. Blackmonth checks all the boxes—readability, versatility, and visual impact. It’s a solid choice for any designer looking to add a touch of elegance to their digital projects without compromising usability.
